Review

Review Text Fresh-faced country newcomer Sara Hamilton adds something remarkable to the genre besides a gritty, soulful voice and equal doses of honky tonk attitude and romance: actual songwriting talent. But though her debut features eight originals -- ranging from the peppy rave-up "Better Than I Used to Be" to the traditional-minded twanger "Back My Way," and the heartfelt road tune "Motel Key," co-penned with Heather Morgan, it's a playful cover which sums up the essence of the collection. On Memphis Minnie's ragtime blues ditty "Ain't No Use Tryin' to Tell on Me," she and project producer "Country Soul Brother" Jesse Dayton tease each other playfully with an irresistible, back and forth repartee. While the songs are Hamilton's visions all the way, the project is truly a collaboration between the singer/songwriter and Dayton. Dayton's eclectic style shines through every moment, from boogie-woogie piano to the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young-like guitar intro on "Back My Way," and the intense George Harrison-esque slide guitar crescendo on the title track. With songs like these and a voice that easily crosses from old-school country to glossy pop environments, there's no doubt that Hamilton could be the genre's next superstar. Gretchen Wilson may be All Jacked Up, but it's Hamilton's name they'll be calling soon. ~ Jonathan Widran
