Review

Review Text With 1997's Come in and Burn, everyone (including Henry Rollins himself) knew that the Rollins Band lineup of Sim Cain, Melvin Gibbs, and Chris Haskett had reached an impasse. While the band was entering into new territory, featuring acoustic and jazz work, Rollins was stomping down the same path he had since his days in the Washington, D.C., hardcore scene. His once-unique blend of near-spoken diatribes over a hard rock beat was in danger of becoming repetitive. Enter Mother Superior. Already an established act, this three-piece hard rock outfit began working with Rollins after he had disbanded the original lineup. The result of this new alliance, Get Some Go Again, is a return to the type of hard rock that Rollins thrives in. The beats are simple, straightforward, and tight. Mother Superior's sound on tracks like "Illumination," "Love's So Heavy," and "I Go Day Glo" are an infectious blend of acid rock, metal, and punk. Their stripped-down sound seems to have reinvigorated Rollins himself, who sounds like he's actually having fun on this record. Unfortunately, the album lacks any new insight from the man. With the exception of the opener, "Illumination," Henry is still going on and on about the same things. Depression, anger, rejection, and so on have been his bread and butter for years, but he never seems to go anywhere on Get Some. While his spoken word shows have gotten better and better with each tour, here Rollins sounds like a broken record. It's frustrating that with all of this great rock hitting you from all sides, you have to wonder who the hell Rollins is actually singing to. ~ Chris True
