Review Text Tod Puckett leads this uncompelling folk-rock quintet from California across their debut effort. Though it might be a cheap way to analyze albums by newcomers, one can tell an awful lot from their readings of covers. It does worlds to reveal the band's particular aesthetic. In this case, Puckett Family Project covers Elizabeth Cotton's "Freight Train," which was brought to the hippie scene by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman on their 1993 album Not for Kids Only. The Puckett version begins with an a cappella rendition of the first verse in a reedy tenor, not unlike Pete Seeger, before swinging into a fairly soulless, rushed shuffle delivery of the rest of the song, with lead singer Tod Puckett slurring through the chorus in an attempt to sound authentic. It doesn't work. The whole rendition is all too fast, though Matt Cunitz's organ adds nice American Beauty-on-diet pills bounce to the song. If only Puckett Family Project ate more of them. ~ Jesse Jarnow
