Digitally re-mastered edition of this 1971 album from the Jazz drummer and bandleader. This release by Roy Haynes and his group the Hip Ensemble was recorded for Mainstream. The group featured two young players who went on to achieve great success: tenor player George Adams and trumpeter Marvin Peterson - a triumph for Haynes' championing of youth, It is a typical early-'70 's mix of modal and free Jazz, played by a group that is half way between acoustic and electric. The material allows the players to stretch out, pushed along by the veteran drummer. Boston-born Haynes had been an early adherent of Bebop, playing with Charlie Parker for a number of years. A pioneer of new techniques in Jazz playing, he worked with Lester Young, Billie Holiday and Eric Dolphy. Under-recorded as a leader, the albums he made are always sought-after.
