The benchmark 2003 release from Chicago modern rockers Plato's Republic, Superbubble is a full-on electric extravaganza tempered with muscle, intellect, a wry sense of humor, and the earnestness that places them in the pantheon of all great Midwestern power pop-rockers. After releasing the low-tech garage pop of 1997's 'The Exploding Cafe' and the eclectic indie-rock of 1999's 'Chow Mein Porn Star', Plato's Republic regrouped with a new bassist, a refreshed approach, and batch of mature, headstrong material that shines. 'Superbubble' proves a perfect marriage of intelligent, provocative lyrics with expressive guitars, inventive bass grooves, and solid, finessed drumming that begs the question: why on earth isn't this band HUGE? The influences, still worn proudly on sleeve, aren't as obvious or heavily borrowed as the first two releases; giving every indication the band has finally come into their own definitive sound. Power pop from the American Midwest has always come in great packages, and this one is especially rocking. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Ahhhh.
