Review

Review Text Some soundtracks aren't terribly meaningful unless you have seen a particular movie, television program or documentary, but others are much better able to stand on their own; this soundtrack to the TV series The Dead Zone (which is based the Stephen King novel) is such a soundtrack. Regardless of whether or not one is familiar with the television program, this CD is a generally decent collection of mostly alternative rock and alternative pop/rock. The alt rock material tends to be on the melodic side; that is true of the Stereophonics' "Help Me (She's Out of Her Mind)" as well as Longwave's "Here It Comes," the Cooper Temple Clause's "Blind Pilots" and the Vandals' "The Unseen Tears of the Albacore." The Dead Zone soundtrack moves into folk-rock and adult alternative territory with Lindsay Price's "Someone Like Me" and Grant-Lee Phillips' "Dirty Secret," and the disc gets away from rock altogether on Joystick's "Good Times" (a funky, hip-hop-ish urban contemporary item) and Kia Kidiri's reggae-tinged rap offering "True Soul." Although those tracks aren't as guitar-minded as most on the album, they don't seem the least bit out of place. Rock, R&B and rap have common roots -- the blues -- and these days, so many rockers grow up listening to hip-hop extensively. We're living in a time in which many Incubus, Ben Folds Five and Creed fans are also Eve and Jay-Z fans, and the inclusion of some R&B and hip-hop shouldn't come as shock to anyone who acquires this CD primarily for its alt rock content. The Dead Zone soundtrack won't go down in history as one of those truly classic, essential, five-star soundtracks (such as the soundtracks of Superfly, Saturday Night Fever and A Bronx Tale), but it's a respectable, satisfying disc that will appeal to those who are and aren't fans of the television series. ~ Alex Henderson
