Conductor Valery Gergiev, at his finest in the repertoire featured here, and the Mariinsky Orchestra, celebrate the 19th c. Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky with the release of two of his most cherished works, Pictures at an Exhibition and Night on Bare Mountain (in it's original version) alongside the composer's Songs and Dances of Death (sung by Ferruccio Furlanetto), a work left in a shambolic, unpublished state at the time of his death, but now recognized as one of his major artistic accomplishments.
