Review Text In 1983, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson scored a major country hit with their duet album PANCHO AND LEFTY. The success of the record, which yielded two Top Ten hits, assured that the two old friends would again record together. 1987's SEASHORES OF OLD MEXICO is that belated follow-up album.Unlike its slickly produced predecessor, SEASHORES OF OLD MEXICO has a homey, subdued feel. By using Haggard's stage band and recording the album at Nelson's home studio, co-producers Haggard and Nelson created a disc that stands in welcome contrast to the overproduced records of the era. The tone of the album is wistful, with nearly all its ten tracks ballads. Haggard and Nelson take a surprisingly respectable stab at the Beatles' "Yesterday" and succeed entirely with "Without You On My Side," "When Times Were Good," "Why Do I Have To Choose," and especially "If I Could Only Fly." A new version of Haggard's classic "Silver Wings" is the only failure on this minor but very enjoyable release from two of country's giants.
