Joseph Williams is an acclaimed, popular solo artist who is also known for having been the lead vocalist for renowned pop/rock group Toto during the mid-to-late 1980s. He remains friends with the band and has appeared on several Toto-related projects over the past two decades. Williams is a soulful, expressive vocalist who has now recorded seven solo albums. Tears is a new album (recorded and released in 2007). This CD is actually the second half of a new, two-CD concept album called Smiles and Tears. Smiles consists of 12, classic hit songs performed by Williams, which are the happy, joyful songs - songs to smile about. Tears covers the other side of the emotional spectrum, containing 12 classic songs which reflect the heartaches and ups-and-downs of love relationships. All of these songs are performed with fairly sparse arrangements, featuring Williams' lead and harmony vocals, plus the piano accompaniment of David Harris. But it this production which allows Williams vocals to truly shine - you can hear and feel every nuance in his passionate vocal performances. Tears contains Williams' renditions of many classic songs, including "Against All Odds" (by Phil Collins), "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" (James Taylor), "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" (Elton John/Bernie Taupin), "All By Myself" (Eric Carmen), "Tears In Heaven" (Eric Clapton), "All In Love Is Fair" (Stevie Wonder), and "Tracks Of My Tears" (Smokey Robinson).
