Review Text Jon Regen's debut recording date as a leader took place at the Blue Note in New York City, with the pianist joined by two of the Big Apple's busiest musicians, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Yoron Israel. Regen, who studied with Kenny Barron at the University of Rutgers, proves himself up to the challenge of playing for the city's demanding jazz audience. He finds new ground within the venerable standard "You Don't Know What Love Is," offering a driving interpretation that never loses steam. He revives the long overlooked "Young and Foolish," rekindling the fire within this pretty ballad with his lyrical playing, complemented by special guest Joel Frahm on tenor sax. Frahm is also on hand for Regen's delicious "Humbug," a jaunty post-bop vehicle that ignites the band. The finale is his Latin-flavored "Un Pollo Loco," a lively piece that shows the influence of Barron upon his pupil. Recommended. ~ Ken Dryden
