Review

Review Text Ghetto Funk is a low-rent collection drawn from various parts of Ike & Tina's career. "Tossed together" is about the only thought for a collection that veers between funky-as-dirt instrumentals ("Ghetto Funk," "Funky Mule"), proto-disco ("Let's Get It On," Raise a Hand"), tough blues ("The Hunter," "Honest I Do"), smooth pop/rock ("Too Much Man for One Woman"), a heavy remake of one of their early R&B hits ("A Fool in Love"), an actual semi-hit from the late '60s ("You Shoulda Treated Me Right"), and -- to make matters confusing -- a track featuring vocals by one of the Ikettes instead of Tina ("So Blue Over You"). Add it all up and you end up with lots of good music by one or rock and soul's most underappreciated units. What you don't get is a solid listening experience or any kind of historical value. It is exactly what it looks like on first glance: a cheapie made up of tracks the label didn't have to pay for. Look elsewhere for your Turner needs. ~ Tim Sendra
