Review Text Pianist George Colligan uses the same quartet that he did on 2000's Desire: saxophonist Perico Sambeat, bassist Mario Rossy, and drummer Marc Miralta. He also adds guest musicians Guillermo McGill (cajón), Antonio Serrano (harmonica), and Tom Guarna (acoustic guitar) on one or two tracks. The prevailing theme here is flamenco, and Colligan comments on the form in subtle and highly personal ways. In terms of both content and production, the record is quite ambitious; Colligan manages to avoid overproduction, however, even as he overdubs trumpet, synth pads, and lots of additional percussion. There's a full-bodied intensity to these tracks, and yet also a kind of grace and delicacy, especially on the title piece and the long opener, "El Gitano de Neuva York." The final two cuts are the sole non-originals: "I Fall in Love Too Easily" features Colligan on his first instrument, the trumpet, running the tune in a straightforward manner with the quartet, sans piano. George Shearing's "Conception" gets a bright, odd-metered treatment that requires some clever yet entirely logical tinkering with the busy melody. ~ David R. Adler
