Review

Review Text Trombonist George Chisholm was considered to be one of England's greatest swing-era performers until his death at the age of 82 in 1997. This recording brings together a few of his colleagues (and his wife, Carole Chisholm), who perform some of his tunes in addition to standards arranged by him. While the playing hearkens to an earlier era, and for the most part, is simply competently played swing, there are nonetheless highlights of note. Ray Wordsworth, who is in the difficult position of standing in for Chisholm, projects a nasal tone but in a solid, lyrical style. Carole Chisholm sports an extremely attractive voice on the four tracks in which she sings; her mature approach is a throwback to some of the great female vocalists of yesteryear. While this is a fine effort, most listeners interested in George Chisholm's music will probably wish to purchase recordings on which he himself played. ~ Steven Loewy
