Review

Review Text In 1998, some 48 years after his sudden death at the age of 49, many of Freddy Gardner's best records were compiled and reissued on an excellent Harlequin disc that combines small-group and big-band recordings made between May 7, 1936, and May 25, 1939. A fine alto, tenor, and baritone saxophonist who also wielded the clarinet, Gardner is heard with a quintet (tracks one and two); alongside pianist Buck Washington in support of vocalist John "Bubbles" Sublette (three, four, and five); with Bert Firman's Quintuplets of Swing shoulder to shoulder with violinist Cyril Hellier and pianist Cecil Norman (six, seven, and eight); and leading his eight-, nine-, or 11-piece Swing Orchestra, a dependably solid combination that included a young trombonist by the name of Ted Heath. This chronologically concise collection closes with a pair of tunes crafted by a sextet that featured trumpeter Norman Payne and pianist Pat Dodd. The vocalist on tracks 20 and 21 was Alice Mann. This package will please anyone who appreciates well-played British swing music from the second half of the 1930s. ~ arwulf arwulf
