Review

Review Text Although Frankie Laine had been in the music business since the early 1930s, it wasn't until his commercial recording of "That's My Desire" that he had a hit and started receiving the acclaim he deserved. This CD presents the swinging singer at the start of this breakthrough, crooning these tunes with an unbeatable groove and fluidity. These wonderfully crisp 1947 radio transcriptions allow the listener to share in the subtle inflections in Laine's voice as well as his broader style. Though the old-time ballad, "Two Loves Have I," is performed at a romantic slow pace, Laine's irrepressible dynamics enliven the proceedings. His vocal muscle is evident as he finesses blues like "Baby, That Ain't Right," while "Black and Blue," written for Ethel Waters and formerly about the woes of a black woman, is here effectively remodeled into a jumping swing song.
