Dr. Seuss wrote the book in response to a Life magazine article about poor reading levels among school students. Dr. Seuss was challenged by a friend to write a book geared toward six-year olds who could read. The idea was to pen a book that these kids wanted to read rather than being mandated to read as part of a school curriculum. This friend supplied a list of words that every six-year old should have known and limited Dr. Seuss to using a vocabulary of 225 words. Dr. Seuss was able to succeed in this challenge, writing a book with only 236 distinct words. He was able to craft a story with only one word having three syllables, 14 words with two syllables and the rest being monosyllabic. The book is easy to read and the story is very engaging for children. Although the book is more than 50 years old, it is still as popular as ever.
