Review

Review Text Earthear is a label that releases material exploring the future of environmental sounds and music. The back of Forests: A Book of Hours includes an apt by John Cage, "The function of art is to imitate nature in her manner of operation." Earthear takes this directive on a very literal level. The album is the field recordings of Douglas Quin, compressing an entire forest evening onto one disc. Woven into this are voices and instruments and the song of fauna. On "Before the War," Quin brings this same approach to the clarinet innovation of David Rothenberg for a strange and beautiful enviro jazz. Rothenberg also adds spoken word, which adds to the eerie dimension of this disc. ~ Tom Schulte
