Review Text Think of Dave Chandler, and the word "doom" immediately comes to mind. Chandler played guitar with Saint Vitus, one of the most important and influential bands in the Black Sabbath-obsessed doom metal/stoner rock/sludge metal field. So in the 2000s, when Chandler, , teamed up with Trouble bassist Ron Holzner to form a new band called Debris Inc., one expects something in the doom/stoner/sludge vein. But as it turns out, this 2005 release is primarily an album of old-school California-style punk. This 49-minute CD has its doom-ish moments here and there, but overall, Debris is more California punk than doom or stoner; more Black Flag than Saint Vitus; more Circle Jerks than Eyehategod, more Germs than Orange Goblin. While Saint Vitus was very much a metal band, Debris is a punk band that is willing to play around with metal at times -- and they aren't a political punk band, but rather, a punk band that is just out to have some dirty, trashy, raucous fun. Debris thrives on rawness, which is exactly what you'll find on their own material as well as on covers of Fear's "I Love Living in the City" and X's "Nausea." The latter is probably the most doom track on the album; "Nausea" was one of the more metallic punk recordings of 1980, and it's a song that easily lends itself to a punk/doom blend. No one will accuse this disc of sounding overproduced; Chandler and Holzner favor a very primitive, garage-like ambiance. Neither are taking themselves too seriously, and the whole album has a loose, informal, even sloppy sort of charm. Some Saint Vitus enthusiasts will no doubt be disappointed that Debris' first release isn't a doom extravaganza, but for fans of old-school West Coast punk, this is a likable (albeit uneven and inconsistent) effort that is good for some cheap thrills here and there. ~ Alex Henderson
