2016 release. From Minneapolis, the land of Happy Apple, Fat Kid Wednesdays, and the Bad Plus, comes another wildly imaginative group, led by drummer and composer Cory Healey, who bends genres on his debut album with his Beautiful Sunshine Band. The somewhat eponymous album, Beautiful Sunshine, swings and swerves through nine original compositions and two covers, St. Vincent's "Cheerleader" and Bob Dylan's "With God On Our Side", traversing bebop, free jazz, ambient, and even metal. To realize his vision, Healey enlisted a band of twin cities jazz scene heavyweights, saxophonist Brandon Wozniak (Dave King Trucking Co.), electric bassist Erik Fratzke (Happy Apple), guitarist Zacc Harris (Atlantis Quartet), and trumpeter Jake Baldwin (Endeavors). In the two years since it's formation, the Beautiful Sunshine Band has developed a chemistry and character that allows it to nimbly navigate the diversity of compositions on this recording. "The name Beautiful Sunshine is tongue in cheek," says Healey, "considering how dark some of the pieces get. The overall theme is that the music is approached with a sense of humor and playfulness." This playfulness comes through the not only the music, but in the range of compositions heard on the album.
