Review

Review Text Who was Charlie Palloy? He recorded fairly steadily as a singer/guitarist for the budget Crown label during 1932-33 and then disappeared without leaving a trace. Palloy sang an awful lot like Bing Crosby while his guitar playing (which is often heard on these 23 selections) is a mixture of Eddie Lang (Crosby's accompanist at the time) and Nick Lucas. Palloy is primarily heard throughout the CD (which has the majority of his recordings) backed by very musical but anonymous dance bands playing stock arrangements that leave room for short solos. Because Charlie Palloy was mostly imitating Crosby rather than trying to be original, the obscure music overall is not up to Bing's level, but it should be of interest to collectors of Depression era dance music. Virtually none of it had been reissued until this 1998 CD. ~ Scott Yanow
