'Bill Coon is one of Canada's great treasures, a master improviser on the guitar...' Just Jazz Guitar Some listeners have called the swinging, moody, thoughtful, tuneful, and engaging music on this CD, 'perfect jazz for a rainy day.' From the liner notes of 'Scudder's Groove': 'Lady Be Good' is a song I've been playing forever, mostly because I fell in love with Lester Young's solo on this great Gershwin melody. The simple bass-line arrangement is apparently effective, as the band always responds with wonderful energy. 'Yago' is a thinly veiled anagram of yoga and a tribute to this ancient practice. Yoga has given my wife and myself so much over the years, and my practice is supported by a wonderful group of yogis and our incredible teacher Shannon Piedt. 'Fred's Bossa' is dedicated to architect Fred Valentine and the wonderful Leighton Artists' Colony, located in the beautiful setting of a wooded forest mere steps from the Banff Centre. I wrote this song in the "Valentine Studio" - a perfect place to explore, write, think, and even sleep. Thank you Fred for creating this magical space. 'Enough to Know' refers to a line in a poem written by a great friend and wonderful writer David Altic. I am constantly amazed at David's creativity, unique view of life and value his warm friendship. 'My Funny Valentine' is a standard that I never tire of playing. Here, I take the opportunity to play trio with Darren and Dave and they certainly make the most of the occasion. Take the time to enjoy Darren's compelling solo. (I include this especially for my wife Jill Townsend, as it's one of her favourite tracks on the CD) 'Ballad for Someone' was recently set to words by the very talented singer/songwriter and dance teacher Kristina Olsen who calls it Don't Wake My Love. I love the way Ross plays the melody and it certainly shows off his incredible tenor sound. 'Scudder's Groove' is the title track because it always elicits a positive reaction from the audience. Lawrence Block's character, ex-cop, Matthew Scudder, inspired this composition. Good friend, long-time jazz lover and supporter Brian Nation introduced me to Block's writing, and also took the great photos for the CD. 'Prelude to a Kiss'. I like to play this beautiful song as a solo guitar piece. Thank you Mr. Ellington.
