Review

Review Text Want to be in an American indie band? You have two options: sound like Slint or rip off your Beach Boys records. Bikeride does the latter, and if the title wasn't any indication, this is a bleached-out, surfside, summertime fizz of old-time pop that is more sunny ode than post-modern deconstruction. Which wouldn't be so bad if there was anything remarkable here. Instead, there are 19 tracks of West Coast melodies with Tony Carbone wailing over it all like Hurricane #1's Alex Lowe with white sun block on his nose. And "Here Comes the Summer," "Summer Winners, Summer Losers," "Summer Song" -- catch their drift? If not, at least take a peek at their cover of "Our Lips Are Sealed," with its cracking/weeping vocals and banjos, or "Shawna," which takes a Casio keyboard samba beat and tops it with hushed lyrical bon mots like how the title's subject "is just so awesome." While this can be endearing, the majority of the other songs are too necrophilic to be worth any such interest. Bikeride was created as a thesis project for Loyola Marymount in California and it shows. How can bands like the Fountains of Wayne get it so right, and Bikeride do so much wrong? ~ Dean Carlson
