Synopsis

Polish death metal titans Behemoth present their fans with the bone crushing music and dark images they crave in this concert video, featuring the band playing a typically brutal live set in an Eastern European television studio. Behemoth: Live Exshaton -- The Art of Rebellion captures the band tearing through eleven songs, including "From The Pagan Vastlands", "Satan's Sword", "Driven By The Five Winged Star", "Pure Evil", and more. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Review

Review Text The '90s saw an underground death metal movement occur in Poland, with groups such as Behemoth leading the charge. One of the genre's top live metal attractions back home, the 2002 home video/DVD release, The Art of Rebellion: Live features a concert recorded inside a TV studio (in Krakow, Poland) on April 27, 2000. The group (which features their newly instated four-man lineup of singer/guitarist Nergal, guitarist Havoc, bassist Novy, and drummer Inferno) proves to be at the top of their game throughout, as they thrash it out for over an hour. Most of the tracks are expectedly performed at a breakneck tempo (especially "The Entrance to the Spheres of Mars," which is performed amidst a flurry of strobe lights and lightning-fast guitar riffs), but such tracks as "Driven by the Five Winged Star" show the group slowing things down, albeit momentarily. Like most other death metal acts of the early 21st century, Behemoth injects theatrics into their stage show, evidenced by Nergal's Gene Simmons-esque fire breathing at the beginning of the track "From the Pagan Vastlands." The Art of Rebellion: Live is also chock-full of bonus features -- including a photo gallery, discography, a pair of rare promo videos, six "rare" audio tracks, as well as an interview with Behemoth founder/leader Nergal. ~ Greg Prato
