Review

Review Text Somewhat brilliantly, Italians Balatonizer don't seem know, or, more likely, care about the fact that neither their name, nor their first album's title -- Occlused in Ottusity -- actually mean anything in the English language. But then such humor is quite apropos for this unholy terror of a grindcore album, and frankly, you ain't heard grindcore 'til you've heard it in Italian! Not that you'll really be able to discern many words amid the band's supposedly bilingual assault, since, as should always be the case with the best grindcore, Balatonizer's guttural vocalizing is rarely ever intelligible -- for all we know vocalist Mario Musumeci could be just making noises. But what noises! His impossibly deep throat matches Marco Failla's ultra-sludgy guitar offensive pound for pound, volume for volume, crust for crust. Failla is also in charge of programming the band's drums, which pretty much leaves Rodan di Maria's mostly inaudible bass as the odd instrument out. In any event, together they unleash 32 songs topping out at 25 minutes (we'll let you do the math as to their average lengths), and adding up to an almost non-stop barrage of furious, giddy and gruesome aggression. Equally brief, and often hilarious snippets of old Italian cult and porn movie dialogue are the only occasional interruptions, and song titles range from the political, to the grotesque, to the scatological -- excellent! Bottom line, Occlused in Ottusity is as outrageous, intense and damn near impenetrable as the late-'80s grindcore founders Napalm Death in their prime. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
