Review Text Kevin and John are brothers from Mallow, Co. Cork and have been playing together now for many years. Their musical influences are varied. Down through the years, Kevin has played many different styles of music (Rock, Jazz, Classical and Folk). John has played mostly Traditional Irish music but also has a strong interest in Andean music. The album 'Drawn to the Flame' was recorded under the shadow of "Knockaroura" mountain during two of the coldest winters on record in Ireland (2009 and 2010). Many long cold nights were spent in the studio putting the tracks together. Although there are many traditional and contemporary pieces on the album, the main motivation for this recording was to produce a collection of some of the new music composed by John and Kevin down through the years. Twenty original compositions are featured on these two discs. What started out as a single album project swelled into a double album (there was simply too much material!). A wide range of musical influences and styles is very evident in the music and some of it is experimental (Kevin experimented with a lot of unusual guitar tunings for many of the tracks). The album title, "Drawn to the Flame" was inspired by a beautiful tune known as 'The Moth in the Lantern', which features on this recording. For a non-musician, it may be curious a thing to watch musicians spend hours and hours practicing or playing at sessions until the early hours of the morning. We are liable to stop mid-conversation and get a glazed look in our eyes upon hearing a nice melody or song (infuriating partners and friends in the process!). We are, at times, a strange breed... like moths in a lantern constantly drawn back to the musical flame which mesmerises us (and maybe even burns at times!). Three great musicians make guest appearances on this album (Johnny "Bongos" Horgan, Kevin O' Sullivan and Clare O' Riordan). John and Kevin have recorded two previous albums with the band Arundó ("Tuesday nights @ 39A" and "Live at Counihans"). This album is dedicated to the memory of John and Kevin's mother, Mary Byrne, who sadly passed away in 2006. She was a woman who could see clearly the beauty and importance of music and the arts and was a constant source of encouragement.
