Review

Review Text Highlighting the talents of the Amato brothers, this set of straight-ahead jazz is a delightful, sometimes quirky collection. Elio Amato's attractively rustic (if not rusty) technique on valve trombone complements his performances on flugelhorn and keyboards, where he is a bit more proficient. The rhythm section is rounded out by siblings Sergio on drums and Alberto on bass, with colleague Rino Cirinna coming in strong on tenor saxophone. The dozen tunes, each written by an Amato, emphasize slightly off-kilter melodies. Cirinna, with an ear to mid-period Coltrane, is clearly the lead soloist, boasting a clear, but powerful siren. Elio's trombone and flugelhorn sound pinched, while his fingers walk the keyboards comfortably. Sergio and Alberto are each accomplished on their instruments, the latter given plenty of solo space on bass. While Anturium may not launch any rockets, it is a fine example of the Italian mainstream. ~ Steve Loewy
