About as execrable as it gets. There’s nothing wrong with low-budget, gore-filled indies made by largely inexperienced production crews – in fact, if a film can overcome the hurdles of independent filmmaking and provide a few minutes of mirth out of the total running time, they get deserved kudos. Some even get cult followings. But
Midnight Mass, shot as an apparent showcase film for a team of New Jersey filmmakers and actors, doesn’t have a single minute of lucidity, amusement or thrill. Gore effects are only so-so, and that’s where the money was spent. Photography is predictable and the filmstock needs cleaning. The sound is deplorable. The story spins its wheels as if caught in mud. It’s amazing this got released to video.
