Another season of
Weeds, another accompanying soundtrack filled with quirky, off-kilter songs.
Weeds: Music from the Series, Vol. 3 covers a wide swath of musical territory, from the rusty-throated piano pop of
Randy Newman (who contributes his own version of
"Little Boxes," the show's appropriated theme song) to raucous, unhinged tracks by
Ween and
the Dresden Dolls. The diversity is meant to appeal to the show's wide demographic, but all the genre-hopping ends by track seven, where acoustic music reigns supreme throughout the final songs.
Great Lake Swimmers,
State Radio, and
Illinois all focus on the acoustic guitar, although each band adds enough flair (note the dance beats that turns
Illinois'
"Nosebleed" into a
Beck-inspired tune) to keep things from getting stagnant. More eclectic and wide-ranging than most
Grey's Anatomy or
Desperate Housewives compilations,
Vol. 3 offers both a pleasant listen and the chance to discover several new bands. As far as soundtracks go, consider this one a success.
