Cacique is the greatest Latin American band in Melbourne, Australia, a thought which may at first inspire a smile, but these guys are pretty good. (About half the group has Latino names, in case you were wondering.) The keyboards are a little cheesy and the male vocals sometimes don't have quite enough blood in them, but the female vocalists are beautiful to hear and the horns are crisp and polished. Most importantly, the group is rhythmically right on target, propulsive without being too driving. There are a lot of great songs to groove to. The album starts with a tasty merengue called "Ven Devorame Otra Vez." The sole rhumba on the album is the incredibly catchy "Maria," which could easily be a Ricky Martin song. "Cuando Cuando" is salsa, but the arrangement, with the piano and the occasional English lyrics, makes it sound like Cuban nightclub music of the 1950s. This might not be the most authentic Latin band in the world, but they sure are fun.
