Urbal Beats, Vol. 2 is a double-disc set that features 24 electronica, dance and techno songs continually mixed by Liquid Todd, the resident electronic DJ at the Los Angeles alternative station KROQ. For the first disc, Todd picks new hits -- Goldie's"Temper Temper,"Portishead's "Over," Fatboy Slim's "Going Out of My Mind," the Crystal Method's "Keep Hope Alive" and the Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up" -- and sprinkles a couple of cult favorites in for good measure. More dedicated fans will find the first disc a little predictable and unnecessary, but the second disc's inclusion of several seminal dance singles -- "Strings of Life" by Derrick May'sRhythim Is Rhythim, "Chime" by Orbital, "Loops of Fury" by the Chemical Brothers, "Go" by Moby, "Voodoo Ray" by A Guy Called Gerald "Charly" by the Prodigy -- increases the set's worth for those interested in the history of techno and rave. It's a pretty entertaining listen, even if the mixing isn't anything remarkable, and it works as a good sampler for fans of the genre.
