Truly a "Collector's Edition" as advertised on the glitzy sparkle box, this double-disc set features the audio CD of Liza with a "Z" along with a DVD chock-full of extras like the full-length A&E television biography of Liza, an interview with Minnelli by John Kander (composer of Chicago and Cabaret), and a glorious program commentary of the full show with Liza giving all sorts of secrets of this extravaganza: how Peter Allen arranged her rendition of "God Bless the Child," how nervous she was before the show began, notations on some of the dancers' moves -- all sorts of little marvels that add so much. The team of Bob Fosse and Liza Minnelli worked magic on the film version of Cabaret that put this sweeping musical performance into motion, and in retrospect it deserved its four Emmys -- quite a spectacle for television. Liza is young -- very young and beautiful here at 26 -- and away from the latter-day gossip that should never take away from this performance that certainly should have made her dad, Vincente Minnelli, very proud. There's a conversation with Liza as well as a rendition of "Mein Hart" that has not seen the light of day until this. It says "Restored, Remastered, and Remarkable" on the packaging, and this is unquestionably a work of art. Biographies and filmographies, clips of Liza live at the 2005 GLAAD Awards -- this is everything a deluxe CD/DVD combo set should be, including Craig Zadan's liner notes inside a four-page booklet. One could gush about the stunning show and drop all the names involved, but it is the additional version with Liza's voice commenting on the film that makes this truly historic. ~ Joe Viglione, All Music Guide
