Another in a series of
Woody Allen collector sets, this one includes a number of the best movies that he made during the 1980s. Each DVD comes in the widescreen format and has a faithful, well-balanced audio transfer, but none of the discs offer any real meaningful DVD extras. Don't blame
MGM Home Entertainment for the lack of extras,
Allen isn't interested in recording audio commentaries or participating in
documentaries about the making of his movies. Thankfully, the movies themselves are good enough on their own to justify this set: the lovely
Hannah and Her Sisters (a surprise box-office hit and multiple Academy Award winner), the delightful show business fable
Broadway Danny Rose, the tender
The Purple Rose of Cairo, the clever pseudo-
documentary Zelig, and the warm, nostalgic
Radio Days. Only 1982's
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy doesn't merit multiple viewings, but it's still an amusing, if slight homage to the lighter sides of
Renoir and
Bergman. Since many retailers reduce the list price of this already reasonable gift set even further, this is a great way to collect a number of
Allen's best movies in one fell swoop.
