Although none of these 18 tracks, most of them taken from 1960s live performances and the rest drawn from old 1920s and 1930s commercial 78s, are particularly obscure or rare, taken together like this and obviously sequenced with some actual thought being applied, they form a nice little set full of passion and vitality. Included are Mississippi Fred McDowell's elegant "Levee Camp Blues,"Son House's classic "Death Letter," a scrappy take by Big Joe Williams of his signature "Baby Please Don't Go,"Tommy Johnson's bright-sounding but ultimately harrowing "Canned Heat Blues,"Robert Wilkins' sturdy and wise "Ain't No Way to Get Along," a ragged, rocking, and horn-augmented version of "Matchbox" by Ike Turner, and a solo piano turn by Otis Spann on his trademark "It Must Have Been the Devil." A nice set, put together with some care.
