Soul Power Instrumentals, compiled by Time Life, contains 18 prime instrumentals that cover the mid-'60s through the late '70s, almost all of which are essential for anyone with a remote interest in soul and funk. While you might have a handful of these cuts already, the whole thing is solid and ideal for a party. Plus, it's easy to forget just how many tremendous instrumentals were released throughout these years. This disc is a tremendous reminder, featuring Brass Construction's "Movin',"Billy Preston's "Outa-Space,"Booker T. & the MG's"Hip Hug-Her,"Hugh Masekela's "Grazing in the Grass,"Dennis Coffey & the Detroit Guitar Band's "Scorpio," and the Meters' "Cissy Strut." While plenty of people are likely to see this disc as too entry level, its contents cannot be worn out.
