One assumes this upstate New York
stoner metal outfit named themselves after the key line from
Aerosmith's
"Sweet Emotion," the one about how the rabbit done died (that is, the girl was pregnant). The connection comes in how the
Dead Rabbits lace their otherwise thoroughly modern
sludge rock (think
Kyuss, repeatedly) with a surprising amount of vintage '70s white-boy blooze: songs like
"Miles Away" and
"Sleep" venture past
Led Zeppelin into
Foghat and
Humble Pie territory. The group even throw in a trio of '60s covers (
Creedence Clearwater Revival's
"Fortunate Son" and
Jimi Hendrix's
"Manic Depression" and
"Little Wing"), although frankly they sound like thoroughly average
bar band fare in this context. Given how much bands like
Queens of the Stone Age owe to their dinosaur-
metal forefathers, it's good to hear a band take a more active part in acknowledging their influences, but the
Dead Rabbits haven't quite progressed beyond those influences yet.
