Scenarios was Montreal guitarist Tim Brady's first album for the jazz label Justin Time. It gathers three pieces for electric guitar, electronics, and tape composed for him by Canada's Marc Tremblay, Spain's José-Manuel Montanés, and Argentina's Michael Rosas Cobian. Three pieces for guitar by Brady complete the set. The music was recorded in December 1993/January 1994 for a CBC radio show. This first effort showcases the guitarist's virtuosity, especially in the first two parts of "Trois Pièces Espagnoles," and his capacity to adapt. On the electro-acoustic side of things, Cobian's "Urbis #3 (Alter Ego)" wins the gold medal: the interplay between tape and guitar parts create a contagious dynamic level -- even the cheap drum machine sequence in the middle can't tear that apart. Among the solo tracks, "LOUD Solo," a reworking of a guitar cadenza from Brady's concerto "LOUD," is the highlight. Cycles of echoing guitar notes build up into repetitive soundscapes that wink at Robert Fripp, but also point in the direction of the composer's Revolutionary Songs. Not as essential as the aforementioned CD or Imaginary Guitars, Scenarios makes a good introduction and remains a worthy album for both fans and casual listeners. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
