In 1919, in what has since become regarded as one of the more poorly considered deals in the history of professional sports,
Boston Red Sox owner
Harry Frazee sold the baseball team's star player,
Babe Ruth, to the
New York Yankees after the
Red Sox failed to win that year's World Series. According to superstitious fans, the sale put a curse on the
Red Sox; while the
Yankees went on to win the World Series 26 times, the
Red Sox were incapable of bringing home baseball's greatest prize. However, in 2004 the
Red Sox finally regained their good luck and not only defeated the
Yankees to gain the American League pennant, but won the World Series against the
St. Louis Cardinals in four games straight.
Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino is a
sports documentary which takes an in-depth look at the
Boston Red Sox, in which players, fans, and sports writers discuss the birth of the curse, the many near-misses of the
Red Sox over the next 87 years, and the triumphant 2004 season that finally brought a winning baseball team back to Beantown.
