File under absurd.
Et Sans are a concept-driven supergroup of French Canadian
experimental rockers who push the boundaries of what is actually listenable. Coming off a full-length album (
L'Autre) consisting of one 40+ minute barely divergent drone, these heady Montrealites (
Fly Pan Am's
Roger Tellier-Craig and
Felix Morel,
Shalabi Effect's
Alexandre St-Onge,
Feu Therese's
Stephen de Oliveira and a guest appearance by violinist
Sophie Trudeau of
Godspeed You Black Emperor!) focus on slightly-more song-oriented structure on
Par Noussss Touss Les Trous de Vos Cranes with four just-barely
rock pieces ranging in length from five to 19 minutes. Repetitive vocal
chants,
musique concrète, Motorik rhythms, and synth drone figure prominently, and as each "song" evolves to end up light years from where it began, it is almost pointless to describe individual tracks. Only track four could stand out as an almost-rocker with its percolating synths and organ driven
Krautrock motif which is eventually swallowed in a chorus of nonsensical vocals, guitar feedback, and pure
electronic chaos. For those who like a challenging listen -- this is not background music --
Et Sans offers a compelling experience, one where perhaps even spiritual enlightenment can be achieved through drone, repetition and noise.
