This collection mixes veterans of
old-timey music with younger advocates of the style, and the result is a delightful sampler for the music and for
Rounder Records, which has supported things by issuing albums by most of the musicians included here. Among the high points are guitarist
Etta Baker's classic
"One Dime Blues," Will Keys' beautiful banjo piece,
"Waltz Kitty Waltz," and the dual banjos of
Jody Stecherand
Kate Brislin's
"Elkhorn Ridge." Kirk Sutphin's banjo and fiddle piece,
"Old Time Back Step Cindy," has a fluid beauty, while
Joe & Odell Thompson bring a wild, archaic fiddle and banjo sound to
"Rya's House." There is a wonderful energy and grace to this music, which battles constantly to keep from being subsumed by the more modern
bluegrass styles, and
Rounder Records deserves kudos for helping to keep it alive.
