More was one of those mythic figures in world music, the godfather of modern salsa, known in Cuba as "the wild man of rhythm," whose vocal chops were that country's answer to Frank Sinatra and Nat "King" Cole. These recordings, made in Havana's RCA studios between 1953 and 1959, capture the artist at the peak of his popularity and creativity. More wasn't a trained musician by any stretch, but his ability to compose by ear (transmitting the parts to his orchestra by imitating the instruments with his voice) and his rhythmic instincts were impeccable. The sheer drive and manic frenzy of these sides is irresistible, and even novices coming to this music for the first time will be sucked into its sweaty, trancelike groove. Highlights are numerous, but "Encantado de la Vida," "San Fernando," "Mamboleta," "Tocineta" and "Salamon," along with More's smooth and impassioned vocals throughout, should not be overlooked. ~Cub Koda, All Music Guide
