Anime sensibilities and
underground hip-hop attitude mingle with
disco flourishes, funky breakbeats, and a bit of
experimental dub's crackling reverb in
Fat Jon's world. He's only one-fourth of the
Five Deez crew, but his frenetic production on
Kinkynasti can't help but overshadow the serviceable rapping. Recalling
De La Soul,
Kool Keith, and
Prince Paul without sounding like any of them,
Kinkynasti has too much going on for anyone but the most skilled rappers to overcome. To their credit,
Five Deez keep it simple lyrically and concentrate on the party.
"Funky" and
"B Girl" could accompany a raging kegger on Venus, and
"Sextraterrestrail" ends up as the highlight with its surreal robot and humanoid lover exchange. Down-tempo instrumentals, a reflective cover of
Slick Rick's
"Hey Young World," and the relaxed vibe of the vocals offer up some deeper moments and a relief from the album's overall zaniness. With a lackluster collaboration with German dubmeister
Pole behind him,
Kinkynasti adds a more satisfying addition to
Fat Jon's curious universe.
