When Florida attorney
Jack Thompson declared war on
Luther Campbell,
the 2 Live Crew, and
Luke Records (formerly
Luke Skyywalker Records) in 1989 and claimed that their X-rated rhymes were in violation of American obscenity laws, he didn't put them out of business. All he succeeded in doing was making
Campbell a poster child for the First Amendment and helping him sell even more albums and singles. When
Campbell launched his solo career with
I Got Shit on My Mind in 1992, it was obvious that he wasn't about to clean up his act -- this CD is every bit as rude, crude, and X-rated as anything that he had done with
the 2 Live Crew. On raunchy, sexually explicit offerings like
"Head Head and More Head" and
"Menage a Trois," Campbell seems to be thumbing his nose at his adversaries by being as offensive as possible. And those adversaries not only include
Thompson and various church groups -- they also include other rappers.
I Got Shit on My Mind finds
Campbell attacking everyone from
N.W.A. on
"Fakin' Like Gangsters" to
Kid 'n Play on
"Pussy Ass Kid and Hoe Ass Play." Overall, this CD is quite entertaining -- that is, if you have a taste for X-rated humor.
Campbell has often described himself as a
rap version of
Richard Pryor or
Andrew Dice Clay, and anyone who finds those comedians amusing is likely to see the entertainment value in the rapper's booty rhymes. Those who are don't care for that type of humor won't.
I Got Shit on My Mind isn't quite as essential as
the 2 Live Crew's best releases, but it's a guilty pleasure that
Campbell's hardcore fans will enjoy.
