ASV/Living Era packaged this (mostly) chronological collection of early Bing Crosby material, including all but one of his 22 chart-topping hits of the '30s. During the decade, Crosby refined his youthful approach to jazz singing and transformed himself from the plaintive high tenor of his 1931 breakthroughs "Out of Nowhere" and "Just One More Chance" to the mellow swing of late-'30s hits like "Too Marvelous for Words" and "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby" (the latter recorded with brother Bob's orchestra). His duet partners include the Mills Brothers and Connee Boswell (on two tracks), with orchestras led by Jimmy Dorsey, Guy Lombardo, Victor Young, and John Scott Trotter. It's easily the best single-disc document of what made Crosby the best jazz and pop singer of his era.
