Inspired by the cult film starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, Highlander the game has you in control of Immortal Owen MacLeod, who is tracking a rival Immortal named Kraken in a futuristic New York City. Since "there can only be one," the Immortal must be defeated in the only way possible: decapitation. Yet getting to Kraken won't be easy, since he wields considerable influence in the city and has loyal followers looking out for his interests. Highlander takes place from a third-person perspective as players master MacLeod's powerful abilities to confront an assortment of enemies.
You must stave off Hunters, fierce assassins looking to kill Immortals, and confront other "princes of the universe" in different eras. Some of the playable areas from MacLeod's past include his adventures in the ancient city of Pompeii, feudal Japan, and the Scottish highlands. The claymore, katana, and twin gladius are available as weapons, with swordplay an integral component to the combat engine. MacLeod's inability to die from traditional means allows him to use his body in unconventional ways, from channeling electricity and fire, to jumping off buildings to avoid enemy attacks. Each vanquished Immortal gives MacLeod new quickening powers to help him defeat Kraken.
