Four young adults in Phoenix, AZ, take a green-colored drug unaware of what its effects might be. As it happens, each of them has a different experience, but there is one thing in common: They experience self-discovery and become aware of their place in the universe. Sort of.
Eric (
Hyrum Patterson),
Ralph (
Matt Gallagher),
Dave (played by director
Karl T. Hirsch), and
Joanna (
Dana Millican) alternate telling their drug-induced episodes, and come to a single conclusion -- life is beautiful, but it's hard work.

Drug-addled Gen-X slackers griping about life after college gets old -- very old, very fast -- but in
Green, the characters are at least amusing about it. Director
Karl T. Hirsch's best decision in this low-budget feature debut was to vary the manner in which the stories are told as the hallucinogenic green drug plays with each characters' mind. The extended animated sequence is a highlight, barely counterbalancing the prolonged sequence that takes place as if in a corporate meeting. Filmed in color (while under the influence) and black-and-white (reality, don't you know), the movie's message about recreational drugs isn't quite clear, but neither is the overriding philosophy about anything else, other than the fact that contemporary culture is boring to those not participating. Actually, the script presents several ideas that are terrific talking points for post-cinema coffee. This one, if you pay attention, will stay with you for a while.
