Not many people can make minimal techno sound interesting, and not even
Jennifer Cardini can make it sound interesting over the entire course of an uninterrupted hourlong DJ mix. But she can do it for longer than most, and she's at her best on this, her first mix program in three years. The loping midtempo rhythm that underlies most of this disc has a slightly slippery feel, and comes across as funky and engaging without threatening the stark and rather chilly mood that prevails most of the time. The album's finest track is its first, the gorgeous
"Sometimes I'm Sad for a Few Seconds [Robert Lippok Remix]" by
Static (featuring singer
Justine Electra), but there are also excellent contributions from
James Lloyd (whose
"May I? [Quarion Remix]" contributes one of the album's few real basslines along with some shredded wisps of dubwise vocal) and
Mike Dunn (whose deadpan near-rap on
"Let It Be House" brings a welcome element of humor to the mix). The feel of the groove changes fairly dramatically -- these are relative terms, remember -- with
Khan's
"On the Run [Kaos Mix]," and the beat gets mixed up again with
Florence's
"The Vineyard [Peter Ford Remix]," creating a nice break for the non-dancing listener. There are a couple of minor missteps, such as the insubstantial
"Takemussa [Dub]" by
Soha and the willfully bizarre
"Fed on Youth" by
False (oh, good -- fake traffic sounds), but overall this disc is a real treat. Highly recommended.
