Culled from recordings both recent and older,
Eddie Kamae and Friends collects a number of collaborations between
Eddie Kamae and other musicians with whom he's worked over the years. The sound is always properly laid-back,
country-fied, even;
Kamae's relaxed, bouncing guitar takes care of that aspect. Along with
Kamae this time are performers ranging from
Sonny Chillingworth, the always excellent slack-key player (though it's his
Bing Crosby-esque vocals that are highlighted here), to
Diana Aki, a strong vocalist performing with
Kamae in the days of
Sons of Hawaii . Styles range from older jazzy vocal pieces to instrumental
country romps, complete with fiddle courtesy of
Joe Bourque. The performances, as well as the choice of pieces, are outstanding across the board. Fans of
Kamae,
Sons of Hawaii , and their ilk should all enjoy the collection thoroughly, with a nice
old-timey feel and high production values.
