Mixtapes are supposed to be mixed, right?
Crunk: Da Mix Tape, Vol. 2 isn't -- in fact, it has some nasty, two-second gaps and crashing song starts. If you can ignore that (or really don't care that it's not a mixtape proper), the collection tops the weaker
Vol. 1 with some raw party crunk, unknown outside of the Deep South. The
electro and twitchy
"Wobble That Thang" by
Sharock is the pick of the litter, with
the Mobstaz Committee's rough-and-tough
"Dirty South" coming in a close second.
Blockk's hard
"Gone Say Somethin'" will do if you forgot to throw the
David Banner CD in your ride, while the biggest hit --
Lil Jon's
"Get Crunk" -- is presented in its excellent,
techno-bleep-borrowing "305 Mix."
Kilo's
"Tick Tock" is a great "what if
Digital Underground went crunk" surprise, but while
MC Breed's
"Gotta Get Mine" is a great track, it's very
West Coast and not crunk at all. It gets
2Pac's name on the cover, which should move some units, but a quick run through the mostly inspired tracks should have been enough of a selling point, mixed or not.
