Cradle of Filth's third full-length is another slab of uncompromising black metal, a darkly melodramatic opus where the song titles alone ("Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids,""The Twisted Nails of Faith," and "Lustmord and Wargasm [The Lick of Carnivorous Winds]") tell almost the entire story; fans of the genre will embrace Cruelty and the Beast, but the unconverted are likely to find it all rather silly. [The 2001 reissue appended a bonus CD that offered the album version of "Lustmord and Wargasm (The Relicking of Cadaverous Wounds)," a remix of "Twisting Further Nails," and covers of Sodom's "Sodomy and Lust,"Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be Thy Name," and Venom's "Black Metal."]

from UK Another Dark and Melodic masterpiece!!!
If you liked "Dusk...and Her Embrace" you will definitely like Cruelty and the Beast. Cradle of Filth's infatuation with Elizabeth Bathory, or the Blood Countess, lead to the creation of this fantastic album. To people that do not know what story of the Blood Countess, understanding the album may be quite difficult.
It might take a couple of times to understand the story that is portrayed in the lyrics. The guitars, and drums are great. Starting with Thirteen Autumns and A Widow and Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids, the riffs are excellent and the keyboards are eerie but mesmerizing. Bathory Aria the 11 min single is another great track, explaining the story of Elizabeth Bathory. Lustmord and Wasgarm is a brutal track, and another favourite. The drums and the guitars are fast and heavy. And again Stuart and Gian play great, and so does Nick. I really recommend this album to people that want to take time and understand the messages in the lyrics.
