It may not give modern carnival-goers a taste for what to expect at the biggest festival south of the equator, but Carnival Rhythms does a superb job of anthologizing the collision of Brazilian (and occasionally, Cuban) music with jazz. Kicking off with "Mango Mangue" by Charlie Parker & Machito, the compilation hits many high points: "E Luxo So" from Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd's Jazz Samba, "Aguas de Marco" in the excellent duet between Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina, Dizzy Gillespie's "Tin Tin Deo,"Chico O'Farrill's 1995 "Manteca," and a sprightly "Elation" by Willie Bobo. The compilers wisely balanced well-known classics with a few solid obscurities, making it a great listen for any degree of appreciation. One caveat: jumping from the '40s to the '60s to the '90s and back, Carnival Rhythms has a varies widely in sound quality. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
